Mitochondria are too small to be accurately observed using a light microscope. The resolution limit of light microscopes is approximately 200 nanometers, whereas the average size of mitochondria is around 0.5 to 10 micrometers. Therefore, the fine details in the structure of mitochondria cannot be resolved with the lower magnification and resolution of light microscopy.
